Middle School Achieves Second-Highest Math Score in Maine After Using Glencoe Math for One Year

The Middle School of the Kennebunks (MSK) is an International Baccalaureate (IB) Program middle school, serving the communities of Kennebunk and Kennebunkport, Maine. MSK is also part of The Maine Learning Technology Initiative, providing laptops to all of the school’s seventh and eighth graders.

In 2015, the eighth graders at MSK came in second in the state of Maine on the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium tests (SBACs) after our first year of using Glencoe Math. According to eighth grade Math Teacher Sharon Greenglass, “We’ve always done well [on the state math tests]—usually coming in ninth or tenth.” But the students’ recent performance on the SBACs was truly exciting.

When Maine adopted the Common Core, Greenglass and her math colleagues were charged with the task of determining how to comply. After examining several programs, nothing came close to Glencoe Math for relevance. And the program was so thoroughly aligned with the standards,  that Greenglass said, “…we had to have it.”

With easy implementation and superior customer support, Glencoe Math was well received by teachers, students, and parents alike.

  • Students loved the interactive text as well as the ability to access the eBook on iPads.
  • Parents praised the program for facilitating more collaboration, critical thinking and problem solving among students.
  • Teachers were pleased with the results:  students were more engaged, and all of them were  passing math.
