How Games Facilitate Learning in Science Education

Today, video games are no longer just an instrument of procrastination. Increasingly, game-based learning is becoming a central component of the school experience to engage students in active learning.

To help students learn how to think and perform in the face of real-world challenges. They need effective, interactive experiences that motivate and actively engage them in the learning process. This is where game-based learning can be helpful.

“Games have a very specific role to play. They really shine when we want students to go deep into content,” says Lee Wilson, Chief Executive Officer, Filament Games.

Often as science concepts become more difficult, students no longer see the connection to the real world and lose interest in the subject. Providing students the opportunity to see and have interactions that would otherwise be impossible to replicate in the classroom, allows educators the opportunity to provide students with the real-world connection and application.

By utilizing the technology-as-partner approach in the science learning process, teachers can spark students’ interest by engaging them in investigations, helping them to develop understanding of both science concepts and science processes while maintaining motivation for science learning.
